An SVG to ICO converter rasterizes a scalable vector graphic (SVG) into Windows icon files (.ico). This tool goes a step further than a typical converter: it generates a separate ICO file for every size you select — 16px, 32px, 48px, 64px, 128px, and 256px — so you get a complete favicon kit in one click. Each generated icon has its own live preview, its own Download button, and can also be bundled into a single ZIP archive for bulk download.
Modern browsers support SVG favicons directly, so why convert to ICO at all? The answer is compatibility, multi-size output, and predictable rendering.
Compatibility. The ICO format is the most widely supported favicon format across browsers, operating systems, and legacy environments. Every browser — including older versions of Internet Explorer, Safari on older iOS, and Windows shortcut systems — recognizes favicon.ico by default . SVG favicons are supported by Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and modern Safari, but fallback behavior varies. Shipping both SVG and ICO is the safest approach.
Multi-size output. This tool generates separate ICO files for each size, giving you maximum flexibility. Use the 16px icon as the tab favicon, the 32px in bookmarks, the 48px in Windows shortcuts, the 180px-equivalent for apple-touch-icon, and the 256px for high-DPI taskbars . No resizing needed — every size is already rasterized from the original vector at pixel-perfect quality.
Predictable rendering. SVG rendering at 16×16 varies between browsers and anti-aliasing engines. Generating each size explicitly from the SVG lets you inspect the output at exactly the size it will be displayed, so you can catch problems before shipping.
If your site targets only modern browsers and you have tested your SVG favicon across Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on desktop and mobile, SVG-only can work. But for maximum reliability — especially for Windows users, PWAs, and users who save your site as a shortcut — an ICO fallback is still recommended . The best practice is to ship both.
Each size serves a specific purpose. This tool generates every one as a separate file so you can place them wherever they are needed.
| Size | Used for | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| 16×16 | Browser tab, bookmarks bar | ✅ Essential |
| 32×32 | High-DPI tabs, taskbar preview | ✅ Essential |
| 48×48 | Windows site shortcuts | ✅ Recommended |
| 64×64 | Safari Reading List, bookmark managers | ✅ Recommended |
| 128×128 | Chrome Web Store, extension galleries | Optional |
| 256×256 | Windows 10/11 taskbar, high-DPI, macOS | ✅ Recommended |
Click Favicon standard to select 16, 32, 48, and 256 at once. Click All sizes to generate the complete kit. Click Large only for 128 and 256 when you need high-resolution icons for a Chrome extension or app tile.
After you click Convert to ICO, the tool rasterizes your SVG at every selected size and builds a proper ICO file for each one. The grid shows every generated icon with:
icon-32x32.ico, so files never clash when downloaded together. You can download icons one by one, or click Download All as ZIP to get everything bundled. The ZIP contains all generated ICO files with clear filenames, ready to extract into your project's favicon folder.
Once you have downloaded the icons, add them to your site. Rename the 16px or 32px icon to favicon.ico and place it in the root of your website — the same folder as your index.html. Most browsers automatically request /favicon.ico, so this alone often works.
For explicit control, add link tags inside the <head> of your HTML:
<link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/favicon.ico"> <link rel="icon" type="image/svg+xml" href="/favicon.svg"> <link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="180x180" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">
The first link uses your ICO for maximum compatibility. The second serves SVG to modern browsers that support it. The third provides a PNG touch icon for iOS home screen shortcuts. Together, this covers every platform .
A logo that looks great at 512×512 can become an unrecognizable smudge at 16×16. These rules keep your icon readable at every size:
Browsers cache favicons aggressively . After you replace favicon.ico, you may still see the old icon for hours or days. This is normal.
favicon-v2.ico) and update the link tag to bypass caches instantly.| Format | Best for | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| ICO | Favicons, Windows shortcuts, maximum compatibility | Not scalable; needs multiple sizes |
| SVG | Modern browsers, infinitely sharp | Older browser support varies |
| PNG | Apple touch icon, Android home screen | Single size; not a drop-in favicon |
| ICNS | macOS app icons | Not used for websites |
The pragmatic approach is to ship both SVG and ICO, plus a PNG touch icon for mobile. This tool generates the ICO kit; use dedicated image tools for the PNG touch icon.
